The Buddhist Council of New York, founded in 1985, is an association of Buddhist Temples and organizations whose mission is to foster dialogue, cooperation and unity within the Buddhist community in the New York City area, as well as to organize events: Meditate NYC, Vesak (commemorating the birth, enlightenment of Shakyamuni Buddha) & the Buddhist Forum each year.

BCNY Membership is open to any Buddhist Temples tracing its lineage to a recognized Buddhist traditions and individuals.

The purpose of the Council as a religious organization is to facilitate communication cooperation and unity among the Buddhist temples and Buddhist organizations in the City of New York and in the State of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut (the “Tristate Area”), to integrate Buddhism into the general community of religious and spiritual practices existing in the United States of America generally, but with more particularity in the Council’s state of incorporation, as well as to engage in such programs and activities, cultural, religious and social in nature, as is deemed appropriate by the Council, so that the Buddhist community shall, through its continued growth and strength promote the study, understanding and practice of Buddhism for the cultural, religious and social enrichment of the public at large.
